What happened:
After Mamamoo’s initial contract ended, everything started going downhill. This often happens to popular senior groups, such as Blackpink, where after their 7 year contract ends, the members tend to go down their own paths. This is exactly what happened with Mamamoo. While renewing their contracts for the first time, Wheein and Hwasa both signed shortened contracts. Wheein, whose exclusive contract ended in 2021, left RBW for THE L1VE, but extended her group contract through 2023 which was also when Hwasa’s exclusive contract was set to expire. Conveniently, Mamamoo was able to squeeze in a world tour right before their contracts ended. Afterwards Hwasa left RBW for PNation. As of right now (that I know of), there has been no confirmation of if Wheein and Hwasa ever renewed their group contracts after this. Meanwhile, it is likely that RBW knew that this was going to happen as in 2022, Moonbyul and Solar debuted as a subunit, Mamamoo+.
Current situation:
First things first, I want to make it clear that THEY HAVE NOT DISBANDED. The members are currently focusing on their solo careers, but will come back as a group when they feel the time is right. I know that I've said this about a million times now, but we just have to be patient. Nobody loves Mamamoo more than Mamamoo, and the members have stated that they have no plans to disband anytime soon.
Moving on, Here is a quick update on their solo careers:
1. Wheein just signed onto a new company (US Entertainment)
2. Hwasa just had a comeback with her new single “Good Bye”, and is currently on tour
- side note: make sure to check out her performance with Wheein, and her appearance on Moonbyul’s Youtube Channel
3. Solar just had her screen debut in a horror movie called The Cursed
4. Moonbyul’s last comeback was Laundri in August
What about the future:
As I stated earlier, we never got any confirmation on whether or not Wheein and Hwasa renewed their exclusive contracts after 2023. What most likely happened is that they did not renew their contracts as Mamamoo are no longer listed as exclusive artists under RBW. What will most likely happen is that when the girls want to have a group comeback, Wheein and Hwasa will sign temporary contracts in order to participate in the group activity. Additionally, we are likely not going to get frequent group comebacks anymore as all of the girls are super busy as soloists. What will most likely happen is that they will have some group activity every few years but mainly focus on their solo careers from now on.
To end on a positive note, it was recently reported that RBW is currently in discussion for a full group comeback in 2026!!!!!!!
